Here’s a simple rule about where the ball should be in relation to your feet that will come in handy if you’re a beginner to medium handicapper. When the lie is flat, for the majority of medium range shots ensure the ball is in the middle of your stance. As a general rule, longer shots such as drives, fairway woods or low irons should be played from nearer your front foot. The driver should be played virtually off the heel of your left foot (if you’re right handed) a 3 wood slightly to the right of that, as wood slightly to the right of that. Get the picture? For the lofted, shorter distance clubs – a 7 or 8 iron or a pitching wedge – you should play from nearer your back foot. Experiment a little to find out what ball position suits you best and remember that you should be striking the ball at the very bottom of your swing. That way you’re getting the club to do the work for you and ensuring maximum power and direction.
