String theory

Using this simple homemade device can pay great dividends on the green.

The most common mistake amateurs make when putting is in their. Quite often they don’t have their eyes correctly positioned over the golf ball, which can mess with their visualization and lead to a misreading of the line.

If you’re struggling with your line — and contact — when putting, try the following exercise to correct the problem.

Tie a string to two sticks — pencils and a shoelace will work — and place one stick behind the hole and the other stick just beyond from where you’d like to putt. (You’ll want to find a flat putt to start.) Carefully place the ball so that the string runs right over top of its equator. Now when you address the ball you’ll know your eyes are directly over the top of the ball if that string is still running through its equator. This simple device can also tell you if you’re taking your putter back correctly — either straight back or on an inside arc — and whether you’re delivering the face square to the ball at impact. It’s a simple, sensational self-check system.
