When you putt it is preferred to have your eyes over the ball as well as slightly behind it: this helps promote a putting stroke that fits your body. If your eyes are past the ball your putting stroke will have an outward curve, and if your eyes are too far inside the ball, the curve will be too inward.
If your putting stroke lacks feel and distance control, it might be because of the speed and tension in your hands when you take the putter back and through the ball. Try this: take the putter back slower than you ever have done before, and gently deliver it back to the ball with a very light increase in speed. This will give you a better feel of the weight of the putter, and the putter will swing through the air on a gravity filled arch, rather than you trying to force it with muscle and tension.
