The importance of arm extension

What is the extension?

You is doing the extension properly when he feels a pulling and a stretch in his arms and rotary cuff muscles (photo 1). This is important because you will be able to achieve maximum clubhead speed.

Just before impact, the elbow of the right arm will be fully extended (photo 2), and if you are doing this correctly, a new sense of confidence will be instilled in your game, due to the “feel” of hitting the ball consistently at the same place every time.

A few other things that need to be addressed is the palm of the right hand that will feel like it is facing down towards the ball (photo 3). The shaft of your right index finger (trigger finger) will also be facing the ball, and will give you the feeling of the club making contact with the ball. The back of the right hand, at the wrist, will feel like it has been bent backwards (photo 4). The thumb will be facing upwards, and the fingers will be facing the ball from behind. All of this creates the correct hand and wrist position. When all of this is combined with the arm extension, you will be ready for the proper impact position (photo 5). When you are getting to the impact position, the right hand is lower than the left hand on the club, and as you get to the lowest part of the arch at impact, the right arm is pushing and extending downward, which is pulling the left arm tight. The job of the right arm is to allow the full extension of the club at impact, and will in turn make your left arm straight. You should also find your elbows being very close, while being as taut as possible. A training aid  using is called “The Impact Ball” (photo 6). This is made specifically for golfers and if you are swinging incorrectly, the ball will fall to the ground. The grooves in the aid help you to securely hold the ball with your elbows from the initial stance, backswing (photo 7) and follow through (photo 8 ).
