Checkpoints for the Downswing

More people think about the downswing than the follow through.

B

utt of Club Comes Down Directly at 6 O’clock If you were to draw a circle on a mirror, about shoulder high, roughly two feet in diameter, stand with the circle off your right shoulder with room enough to swing the club. When you get to the top of the backswing, the butt of the club should be in the center of the circle. When you start your downswing, the butt of the club should reach 6 o’clock, or the middle bottom of the circle.

Right and Left Elbows Looking to your right in a mirror, at the top of your backswing, your right elbow should be lower than your left. The right forearm should match the spine angle.

Shaft and the Right Forearm

If you are looking from your right side down the fairway, the shaft should match the forearm halfway down the backswing. If the shaft is between the forearms, the club would be to steep causing a downward blow to the ball.

Clubhead and the Right Elbow

As previously stated, the shaft should match the right forearm in the downswing. Looking from the same direction, the clubhead should match the elbow position. The shaft should be even to the forearm and the club should be even to the elbow.
